Signing for Hearing Children's Literacy
The bulk of this book contains hard facts, research, and historical evidence about how a hearing child's education may be enhanced with the addition of sign language. Daniels also includes a chapter for teachers and one for parents with suggestions on how they can integrate sign language into their hearing child's education. Her conclusions show improved reading and spelling skills, self-esteem, and a higher comfort level with expressing emotions.
Children can be full participants in language and communication with their families and peers at ages where their spoken vocabulary is still developing. Integrating sign language with a young child's spoken education is also an effective tool for establishing an interaction between home and school, helping teachers with class management, and has been shown to initiate an enthusiasm for learning on the part of the student.
